Maine Family Federal Credit Union service outage passes 3-day mark

Maine Family Federal Credit Union’s Remote‑Banking Outage Extends Into Third Day
A prolonged outage affecting the credit union’s online and mobile banking services is now in its third week, with no clear recovery time announced. The problem began in early Tuesday, when the credit union posted on social media that members were experiencing trouble accessing digital accounts. By Wednesday, the bank’s IT team had called in a service provider, but overnight attempts to restore the system failed.
“We certainly hope services will be back sooner rather than later, but we are relying on a third party that is currently trying to restore between 250 and 300 credit unions,” President & CEO Dan Clarke told members in a Friday statement. “While we cannot undo the disruption this has caused, I hope our actions and communication demonstrate our continued commitment to serving our members.”
Services Still Working
Clarke clarified that the outage is limited to remote banking. Direct deposits, debit card transactions, checks and automatic or recurring payments are operating normally, and the credit union’s physical branches in Lewiston and Auburn remain open. Drive‑thru hours are still in effect on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
“Many members rely on digital banking to keep a close eye on their finances,” Clarke added. “If you need balance information, transfers, or account assistance while these services are unavailable, our team is ready to help.”
Trust and the Bigger Picture
The outage has raised concerns about security and reliability. The credit union emphasized that the issue is a service disruption, not a data breach. “We know this outage has affected confidence, not just convenience,” Clarke said, acknowledging members’ frustration.
He also explained why a quick fix is not straightforward. “Switching providers is a lengthy endeavor. The reality is that core processing systems affect nearly every aspect of a financial institution’s operations. Evaluating, selecting and implementing a new core provider is a highly complex undertaking that can take years to complete.”
Clarke assured members that every call, email and comment is being read. “Thank you for your patience, your feedback and the opportunity to continue serving you,” he concluded.
Current Status
Despite the service provider’s efforts, no estimated time for restoration has emerged. The outage continues to affect remote banking, but other banking functions remain unaffected. Members seeking assistance can visit the Lewiston or Auburn branches or call the credit union’s customer‑service lines.
For the time being, the only way to access accounts is through the credit union’s physical locations or by telephone, while the bank works with the third‑party provider to restore full online and mobile capabilities.
