A Maine Department of Transportation worker was injured when he was hit by a vehicle while clearing debris on Interstate 295 in Gardiner on Wednesday.

Maine State Police responded to the crash on I-295 north in Gardiner around 1:45 p.m., Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

A crew of three DOT workers was removing tire debris from the roadway with their truck displaying warning lights in the breakdown lane, according to a preliminary investigation Moss said.

An SUV operated by a 39-year-old Gardiner woman hit a worker, a 57-year-old Lewiston man, who was brought to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with non-life-threatening injuries, Moss said.

The worker had exited the vehicle to remove debris near the right-hand fog line, Moss said, while the other two workers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Officials did not release the names of those involved. The crash remains under investigation, Moss said.

The accident occurred roughly six months after two DOT workers involved in a bridge project were killed and a third was injured in a crash on Interstate 95 near Exit 127 and the Oakland town line.
