Maine Animal Coalition’s 21st annual Veg Fest set for Portland

Maine Animal Coalition Kicks Off 21st Annual Veg Fest in Portland
Portland, Maine – On October 24, the East End Community School in Portland will host the 21st annual Veg Fest, a free public event organized by the Maine Animal Coalition. The festival, scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., aims to educate residents about plant‑based living through a mix of food tastings, informational displays, and talks from experts in philosophy, medicine, and food science.
The lineup of speakers brings a range of perspectives to the conversation. Matthew C. Halteman, a philosophy professor at Calvin University, will open the event with “Hungry Beautiful Animals: The Joyful Case for Going Vegan,” a discussion that promises to explore the ethical and philosophical dimensions of veganism. Dr. Amanda Cardella, an osteopathic physician from Topsham, will address the health angle with “Visceral Fat, Fiber, GLP‑1 Medications: What’s the Plant‑Based Connection?” Her talk will highlight how plant‑based diets can impact body composition and medication response. The festival will also feature Tim Holland, founder of Midcoast Vegan in Brunswick, who will demonstrate “The Joy of Vegan Cheese and Meat Making,” offering practical guidance for making dairy and meat alternatives at home.
Attendees can sample a variety of plant‑based foods from thirteen vendors and exhibitors. Highlights include Tootie’s Tempeh, Hi Bombay, Sweet Pea’s Plant‑Powered Meals & More, and Mad Flavor, known for its charcuterie and cheese alternatives. Visitors can taste a range of dishes—from savory sandwiches to decadent desserts—while learning about the sourcing and production of each product.
The Maine Animal Coalition says the festival’s goal is to “provide a welcoming space where people can discover the benefits of veganism, whether they’re curious, committed, or somewhere in between.” The event is free of charge, with no registration required. For additional details or to view a full schedule, residents can visit the official Veg Fest website at mainevegfest.com.
Veg Fest marks the 21st year the coalition has hosted the gathering, which has grown steadily since its inception in 2003. The community‑based festival continues to draw food lovers, health enthusiasts, and curious locals eager to explore plant‑based options.
