Lewiston’s ‘Singing Soldier’ to perform live Sept. 1 on ‘America’s Got Talent’

Isaac Atkins, Lewiston’s ‘Singing Soldier’ will be taking the stage Sept. 1 for a live performance on “America’s Got Talent.”
The show’s 21st season kicked off Aug. 18, with live performances airing every Tuesday and the results the next night.
It will be Atkins’ first time performing live on the show after his audition in June got him the Golden Buzzer from former Spice Girl Mel B, automatically sending him to the next round of the talent competition.

The live performance has Atkins a little scared, he said.
“It’s a different beast,” Atkins said Monday from Wahiawa, Hawaii, where the Lewiston High School graduate is an Army sergeant on active duty. “This time it’s live, there’s no room for error. It’s nerve-wracking but I just have to trust my abilities and be confident in myself and go do it.”
Since his June performance, Atkins said it’s been overwhelming with the amount of love and support he’s been getting. But he’s grateful that people enjoyed what they saw.

“The love and support from people across the country and even internationally is just incredible,” he said.
Atkins could not tell us what song he’ll be singing live but did say it will have a “bluesy-rock” kind of feel to it.
He also keeps thinking back to when he got the Golden Buzzer.
“It was definitely a shock,” said Atkins. “You have to go in being confident in yourself but there’s nothing that can prepare you for when that happens. You don’t think it can happen to you and then it does.”

He also respects Mel B. The fact she spoke so highly of him caught him off guard, Atkins said.
Atkins said he continues to practice wherever he is. He’s nervous, but said that’s OK — he’s doing something he’s done his entire life, just with more eyes on him.
” It’s just muscle memory for me,” said Atkins. “As long as I can practice and hear myself, I can be more confident when I walk on that stage.”
