Lewiston Public Schools adopts new safety system with Sandy Hook non-profit

Lewiston, Maine – Lewiston Public Schools announced today that it has entered into a partnership with SandyHook Promise to launch an anonymous reporting system designed to help prevent crises within the district.
The new system will allow students, staff, and parents to confidentially submit reports of concerns that could signal safety or mental‑health issues, such as bullying, self‑harm, or potential threats. Reports can be made through a secure web portal and mobile application, ensuring that anyone with a concern can reach out without fear of retribution.
SandyHook Promise, an organization formed in response to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, has developed a suite of resources aimed at promoting awareness and prevention of school‑related crises. By integrating its expertise with the district’s existing safety protocols, Lewiston Public Schools hopes to create a more proactive environment for identifying and addressing problems before they escalated.
The partnership will include training for school administrators and counselors on how to handle anonymous reports, as well as protocols for coordinating with law enforcement and mental‑health professionals when necessary. The system is slated to go live at the start of the next academic year.
“We recognize that early reporting is a key factor in preventing crises,” a district spokesperson said. “By giving students a safe channel to voice concerns, we aim to strengthen our community’s capacity to respond promptly and effectively.”
While the anonymous reporting tool is a significant step toward enhancing safety, district officials emphasized that it is not intended to replace professional mental‑health services. Instead, it is part of a broader strategy that includes counseling resources, crisis intervention plans, and ongoing staff training.
The initiative follows a growing national focus on school safety and student well‑being, and it aligns with SandyHook Promise’s mission to support communities in preventing future tragedies.
