Lewiston Man Arrested After Fire at Libby Avenue Home

A 38‑year‑old Lewiston resident, Trevon Stoops, was taken into custody in Auburn early Tuesday following a domestic‑violence incident and a suspicious fire that broke out at a nearby home.

Stoops, who is listed as a transient in the Androscoggin County Jail, was charged with domestic violence aggravated assault, obstructing the report of injury, and falsifying physical evidence. In addition, the Office of the State Fire Marshal has brought a Class A arson charge against him.

The trouble began on Sunday when Lewiston police were called to a disturbance at 14 Libby Avenue, a residential property in the city’s southern district. The following day, after 7 p.m., firefighters received a call that a fire had started on the top floor of the same house. Police immediately searched the scene for Stoops, suspecting his involvement in both incidents.

“Due to the suspicious nature of the fire’s origin, the Office of the State Fire Marshal was notified and responded to assist with the investigation,” Lewiston police said in a statement.

The suspect was located on Riverside Drive in Auburn at 8:14 a.m. Tuesday. He was taken into custody and is being held without bail at the county jail.

Shannon Moss, public‑information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the fire “remains under investigation.” The investigation will determine whether the blaze was intentionally set and how it relates to the earlier domestic‑violence incident.
