Lewiston/Lisbon girls’ volleyball team earns Varsity Maine “Team of the Week” honor after flawless fall debut
The combined Lewiston and Lisbon high‑school volleyball squads—nicknamed the Blue Devils—were named Varsity Maine’s “Girls Team of the Week” for the fall sports season, after a perfect start that has left opponents scrambling to keep pace.
Coach Jennifer Curlee, who has led the program for three seasons, said the team’s recent success is the result of the talent finally coming together. “We’ve had plenty of talent in recent years, but we needed that all‑at‑once chemistry,” she explained. “Now the Blue Devils know that opposing teams are taking notice.”
The Blue Devils opened the season with a series of road victories. On September 3, they defeated Brunswick, followed by a win over Brewer on September 5, and a triumph against Mt. Ararat on Friday. They then won their first home match on Monday, 4‑0, against Hampden Academy. The team remains undefeated, not only overall but in every set played.
Curlee noted how quickly the team’s confidence has grown. “After the first win, everybody’s like, ‘Huh, whatever,’ but after the second win, we’re now on people’s radars,” she said. “So I tell the girls, ‘Everybody’s out to prove us wrong, so we’ve got to come at them with that bigger chip on our shoulder,’ which is what Lewiston is known for or thought of.” The coach added that she’s glad to lean into that competitive edge.
The program’s turnaround is stark when compared with the previous season’s record. In 2024 the Blue Devils finished 2‑12 and ranked 16th out of 18 teams in Class A. Now, with a 4‑0 record and no sets lost, the team’s performance has captured the attention of the local sports community.
Varsity Maine, which selects a boys’ and girls’ team of the week during the fall sports season, chose the Lewiston/Lisbon squad based on factors such as success stories, bounce‑back efforts, and notable accomplishments. Teams can be nominated by athletes, coaches, or athletic directors, and the selections are made by staff members who consider the season’s developments.
The Blue Devils’ early success has already generated buzz in the region. Fans and rivals alike are watching to see whether the team can maintain its momentum as the season progresses. Whether the Blue Devils can continue to surprise their opponents remains to be seen, but for now, Coach Curlee and her players can celebrate a strong start to a promising season.
