Birkhead Honors Daughter’s 20th Birthday Through Annual Kentucky Derby Tradition

Larry Birkhead shared a heartfelt tribute to his daughter on September 7, marking the milestone of her twentieth birthday. In a video collage posted to Instagram, Birkhead presented a curated collection of photographs spanning her childhood through to recent moments. The post, captioned with the Lenny Kravitz hit "Happy Birthday," included images of Dannielynn sitting on steps in a black outfit and later shown in a pink tutu hugging her father.

The visual timeline served as both a memory book and a celebration. According to the post, the collage captured Dannielynn’s evolution from a young child in a one-piece bathing suit to a teenager preparing for her upcoming birthday. The final image showed her in a pink tutu, smiling broadly as she embraced her father.

While the birthday celebration is a personal moment, it is part of a longer-standing family tradition rooted in the Kentucky Derby. Since Dannielynn was three years old, the Birkhead family has attended the race annually. This annual pilgrimage began after the couple met Anna Nicole Smith at the 2004 Kentucky Derby. Following Smith’s tragic death in 2007, Larry Birkhead stepped into the role of primary caregiver, raising his daughter away from the intense public eye associated with his former partner.

The decision to bring Dannielynn to the Derby each year reflects a careful balance between honoring the past and providing stability. Birkhead explained that the event acts as a significant rite of passage for his daughter. "It's kind of been a tradition that we would go every year," Birkhead stated in a prior interview. "That's where I met Anna Nicole Smith, and it's something I've taken my daughter back every year since."

The father views the trip not merely as a vacation, but as a meaningful ritual designed to bridge generations. "Since I did meet her mom there, it started off just kind of me taking her back and showing her around," Birkhead elaborated. "And then it came to people looking for my daughter there because I really don't let her do any public events. And so, in all honesty, the Kentucky Derby is kind of the growth chart for Dannielynn."

The online response to the birthday post mirrored the family's philosophy of restraint mixed with celebration. One commenter noted the irony of the occasion, asking, "How in the world is she 20 already we can't be getting old we are still young." Another simply extended warm wishes, writing, "Happy 20th Birthday! I feel so old. lol."

These reactions underscore the unique dynamic within the family. While the parents cherish the time spent together, they have worked to ensure Dannielynn maintains a level of privacy. By anchoring their relationship to the Derby—a beloved local tradition—the Birkheads provide a stable environment for their daughter to grow up. As Birkhead put it, the event allows them to honor the history of their family while continuing to create new traditions with their little girl.
