Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are navigating a new dynamic as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Murray, who signed with Minnesota after being released by the Arizona Cardinals, brings eight years of NFL experience to a quarterback room that includes the young McCarthy, a 2025 first‑round pick whose rookie year was wiped out by a knee injury.

During an off‑season practice this week both players were asked to describe their working relationship. Murray responded positively, saying, “It’s been great. Obviously, I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him. I’ve played seven years now, going onto eight. So, I’m considered a veteran even though I don’t see myself as that. Give him any knowledge that he needs. Again, we’re both competitors, and I know we both want what’s best for the team.” When questioned about how McCarthy handles criticism from a veteran teammate, Murray added, “Of course. He’s overly acceptive. He’s always communicating, asking questions. Stuff like that. So, it’s been good.”

McCarthy offered a different perspective, likening the situation to a classroom setting. “It’s just like two guys in a classroom,” he said. “He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us.” When a reporter followed up about any potential awkwardness, McCarthy replied, “Awkwardness? It’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. It’s just kinda how it is, so I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness.”

The comments come as the Vikings evaluate who will start under center in Week 1. Murray’s veteran résumé positions him as a leading candidate, while McCarthy continues to develop after a season in which he appeared in 10 games, threw for 1,632 yards, recorded 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and completed 57.6% of his passes. The team finished the previous year with a 9‑8 record under head coach Kevin O’Connell, missing the playoffs after a 14‑3 season that featured Sam Darnold as the starter while McCarthy rehabilitated.

Darnold, who was not re‑signed by Minnesota, signed with the Seattle Seahawks and helped guide them to a Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots in February. In his place, the Vikings retained Carson Wentz as a backup option for McCarthy during the 2025 offseason roster construction.

As training camp approaches, the quarterback competition will be closely watched, with both Murray and McCarthy emphasizing their shared goal of doing what’s best for the team.
