Kennebunk Town Hall was evacuated Wednesday morning and closed for the day after police were alerted of a bomb threat.

Kennebunk police said in a news release that town officials received the threat via email, and that the Kennebunk Fire-Rescue Department — housed in the town hall complex — received a similar threat.

Bomb-detecting K-9 units were brought to the scene by Maine State Police and Maine Capitol Police, but no explosives were found, police said.

Police said the threat appeared to come from outside of Maine and that the FBI was contacted.

Deputy Police Chief Eric O’Brien said the emails were opened by staff when they arrived at work Wednesday morning, and that police were notified soon after. He said police aren’t yet sure exactly where the emails came from.

The FBI’s Boston office, which oversees Maine, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday afternoon.

A Maine State Police spokesperson said the agency is not involved in the investigation and its only role was helping to provide K-9 units.

Kennebunk police’s investigation is ongoing. Officials urged anyone with any information to call 207-985-6121 or leave an anonymous tip by calling 207-985-2102, ext. 1622.
