Kennebunk Rams Snap Falmouth’s Reign in a Last‑Second Showdown; Skowhegan River Hawks Start New Era with Dominant Field‑Hockey Wins

Kennebunk, Maine – In a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Kennebunk High School Rams defeated the reigning Maine state football champions, the Falmouth Spartans, 33‑28. The Rams’ victory hinged on a spectacular defensive play in the final 25 seconds: linebacker Tyler Samson intercepted a slant route and secured the win with the ball on the Rams’ 6‑yard line. The game featured three lead changes and ended in a dramatic finish that earned the Rams the “Boys Team of the Week” honor from Varsity Maine.

A Game of Momentum Swings

Ethan White paced Kennebunk’s offense, carrying the ball 19 times for 181 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Samson contributed on the ground with 43 yards on six carries and also scored two touchdowns. On the Spartans’ side, Alex Hau hauled in 159 yards on 11 receptions, adding two touchdowns, while quarterback‑wide receiver Micah Derring threw for 275 yards and two scores.

The final score, 33‑28, reflected the back‑and‑forth battle, with Kennebunk’s defense holding firm in the closing seconds to prevent a late Falmouth comeback.

Skowhegan Field‑Hockey Begins a New Chapter

In the state’s field‑hockey scene, the Skowhegan River Hawks, the first team to play the season without legendary 20‑time state‑champion coach Paula Doughty in 45 years, opened the year with two shutout victories. The Hawks defeated Oxford Hills 7‑0 on Thursday, followed by a 5‑0 win over rival Mt. Blue in their second outing.

Key performers in the first game included Kaitlyn Dufour, who netted three goals and added two assists, and Faith Pease, who tallied two goals and an assist. The second win saw Dufour add two more goals, Pease score once and contribute two assists, while Charlotte Haynie recorded a goal and an assist. Skowhegan’s defensive line held both opponents scoreless, underscoring a strong start to the season.

Varsity Maine Names Teams of the Week

Varsity Maine’s sports editors, Bill Stewart and Lee Horton, select a boys’ and girls’ team each week during the fall sports season. Criteria include standout performances, notable comebacks, and other significant achievements. Both Kennebunk football and Skowhegan field hockey were chosen for this week’s honors, reflecting their exceptional play and the stories they embody.

Looking Ahead

The Rams now carry momentum into the remainder of the season, having edged past a dominant Falmouth squad in a game that will be remembered for its late‑game heroics. Meanwhile, the River Hawks’ early shutouts suggest a promising season under new leadership, as they navigate the challenges of a new coaching era.
