Justin Gaethje targets Ilia Topuria's divorce, igniting feud before White House showdown

UFC Makes History at White House as Topuria-Gaethje Rivalry Turns Nasty
The White House will host its first major mixed martial arts pay-per-view event this weekend, but the buildup to UFC Freedom 250 has been anything but presidential.
The card takes place Sunday on the South Lawn, marking the first time a major UFC event has been held at the historic venue. Former President Donald Trump, who remains close with UFC leadership, is expected to be cageside for the headline bout between lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje.
The fight itself would be enough to draw attention. Two of the sport's most aggressive fighters competing for lightweight supremacy in a venue synonymous with American political power. But the real story entering fight week has been an extraordinarily personal war of words between the two competitors.
The tension stems from Gaethje's comments during a recent appearance on FOX Sports, in which he referenced Topuria's recent divorce. The interim champion made several pointed remarks about the champion's personal situation that drew immediate criticism.
"I can say this: I would leave him too. That's all I'm saying. I would leave him. No way I would put up with his—" Gaethje said, leaving the thought unfinished.
Topuria responded publicly on social media platform X, calling out what he described as a line crossed.
"Justin crossed a line. What happened between my ex-wife and me is our business," Topuria wrote. "We may no longer be together, but she is the mother of my daughter. To everyone insulting her or speaking about things they know nothing about: show some respect. You don't have to respect our relationship. But respecting someone's mother should be one of the most basic codes in life. Be better."
Gaethje did not back down. He fired back with his own response, one that invoked his own father into the escalating dispute.
"Proving my point. Insufferable little b**** boy. Never said a thing about your wife. You want to speak words to my father then act like I crossed some line. We already fighting buddy," Gaethje posted.
Topuria delivered the final word in the exchange, producing a response that detailed what he claimed were comments made by Gaethje's father during a prior encounter.
"You should've kept your father out of this. He was the one calling me a short guy and saying you'd smash me, all while holding a beer in his hand. Then you started talking about my divorce and telling the world you wouldn't want to be my roommate. Idiot," Topuria wrote. "First, we're fighting, not dating. Second, I'm not looking for a roommate. When I put you to sleep and you're lying there next to the rose, I'll look at your father and ask him one simple question: Who's the short one now? I'm gonna break you Justin."
The fighters have traded barbs publicly before, but the inclusion of family members and the reference to Topuria's divorce have elevated the rhetoric beyond typical pre-fight banter.
UFC has not commented publicly on the exchange. The organization previously announced the White House event as a landmark moment for the sport, bringing MMA's signature brand of entertainment to the seat of American political power.
If Sunday's main event delivers even a fraction of the drama generated this week, the bout could become one of the more memorable title fights in recent memory. Topuria enters as the reigning champion, while Gaethje holds the interim title, a situation that has added significance to the matchup regardless of the personal animosity.
Doors open earlier in the day for the undercard, with the main event scheduled for the evening. Coverage details and broadcast information have been released through UFC's official channels.
