Indiana’s freshman quarterback Josh Hoover made his debut against North Texas in a Saturday game that was as brutal as it was exciting. The 23‑year‑old, a former TCU transfer, was on the field for the Hoosiers when a defensive lineman from the Mean Green delivered a hard‑hit facemask that left Hoover bleeding but still playing.

The play occurred in the second quarter. While Hoover was dropping back to pass, North Texas defensive lineman Udoka Ezeani grabbed his facemask, twisting it around to the back of Hoover’s head. The tackle was described by commentators as one of the “worst and most blatant facemasks” seen in college football. Despite the blood spurting from his nose and face, Hoover did not leave the game.

Shortly after the penalty was called, the Fox Big Noon Saturday crew captured Hoover’s battered condition, showing him half‑eyed and blood‑streaked. Broadcaster Gus Johnson quipped, “Welcome to Indiana. He bleeds red.” The play did not deter the quarterback, who found wide receiver Charlie Becker for a 9‑yard touchdown a few plays later.

Hoover’s overall performance was impressive. In the first half he completed 7 of 8 passes for 100 yards and tossed two touchdown throws. The second touchdown came just after the facemask incident, proving that the Hoosiers’ new signal‑caller was ready for the challenge.

Indiana entered the game with a strong legacy. The program is coming off a national championship, and its roster already boasts a former Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza. Hoover, who took over the starting job in the 2024 season, faces big shoes to fill as he leads the team into a competitive Big Ten schedule.

Despite the rough start, Hoover’s resilience was on full display. Blood dripped from his chinstrap and facemask as he ran the play to the end zone, and his face and jersey were visibly streaked. Yet he remained in the game, determined to prove that football is a tough sport that rewards perseverance.
