Independent candidates must tell Mainers the truth | Letter

Stephen Sawyer of Kennebunk has authored a letter to the editor arguing that transparency about candidates’ political histories should be a priority for Maine voters, particularly those running as independents or unenrolled.
In the letter, Sawyer urges voters to ask candidates a direct question: What political party did they belong to before becoming independent? He writes that while candidates are free to change affiliations, a new label does not erase their political past, and legislators often vote with their former party’s caucus once elected.
Sawyer distinguishes between individuals who have been genuinely independent for years and those who recently left a major party while seeking office, calling these different political histories. He argues that voters deserve to know which category a candidate falls into, and that changing a party label should not constitute a political makeover.
The letter acknowledges that former Republicans will not always vote Republican and former Democrats will not always vote Democratic, but maintains that voters can make fair judgments only when they have complete and accurate background information. Sawyer closes by asserting that Maine voters are capable of deciding for themselves, provided they know where candidates came from.
