Sanford, Maine – Police and firefighters rushed to a vehicle on a Sanford street after authorities discovered a one‑year‑old child inside a car that was being stopped by immigration enforcement agents.

The incident began when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers pulled over a vehicle for an alleged traffic violation. When the officers opened the driver's side door, they found a toddler in the passenger seat. The child was quickly removed and handed over to the Sanford Fire Department for further care and transport.

“Having a small child in a vehicle under those circumstances can be dangerous, and we’re relieved the child was safely extracted,” said a police spokesperson. The responders coordinated with ICE to ensure the child’s safety and to facilitate any necessary medical evaluation.

The child was transported to a local medical facility for a routine check‑up. No injuries were reported.

ICE officials have not released additional details about the stop, and no charges or citations have been announced. The police department confirmed that the incident was handled in accordance with state and federal protocols for child safety.

Sanford Fire Chief Mark R. Hennigan stated that the department’s quick response was part of its mandate to protect all residents, especially vulnerable children. “We are trained to respond to emergencies that involve potential harm to anyone in a vehicle, and this was no exception,” he said.

The case illustrates the intersection of immigration enforcement and local emergency services, a partnership that aims to safeguard the well‑being of all people in the community.
