Falmouth 7, Bonny Eagle 0 Cooper Bucci delivered a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks, leading the eighth-seeded Falmouth Navigators to a 7-0 victory over ninth-seeded Bonny Eagle in a Class A South preliminary-round baseball game Tuesday in Falmouth. The Navigators broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning. Jacoby Porter and Milo Matson each collected three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Mason Pechinski and Ben Robbins drove in two runs apiece, and Pechinski added a triple. Atticus Dixon had two hits for Bonny Eagle. Falmouth, now 11-6, advances to face top-seeded Gorham in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Bonny Eagle finishes the season at 9-8.
Yarmouth 2, Poland 1 Tyler Emerson turned in a commanding performance on the mound, allowing three hits while striking out eight and walking none, as the sixth-seeded Yarmouth Clippers held off the 11th-seeded Poland Knights in a Class B South preliminary-round game in Yarmouth. Iggy McGrath provided the decisive blow, a two-run single in the fifth inning. Gabe Janczuk and Jack Estabrook each added a double. Poland had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Cade Johnson. Yarmouth, now 10-7, moves on to face third-seeded Greely in the quarterfinals. Poland ends its year at 7-10.
Lake Region 7, Mountain Valley 6 The fifth-seeded Lake Region Lakers rallied past the 12th-seeded Mountain Valley Falcons 7-6 in a Class B South preliminary-round game in Naples, scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth on an error. Jaiden Meehan sparked the Lakers with three hits and the decisive run. Dylan Blair tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single and earned the win with 4⅓ innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out six and walking one. Lake Region improves to 12-5 and will face fourth-seeded Cape Elizabeth in the quarterfinals. Mountain Valley concludes its season at 7-10.
Sanford 11, Kennebunk 2 Brady Boissonneault racked up three hits, Brody Baron added two hits and three RBI, and the sixth-seeded Sanford Spartans rolled past the 11th-seeded Kennebunk Rams in a Class A South preliminary-round game in Sanford. Cayden Gendron picked up the win with two runs allowed (one earned) over five innings, adding two RBI and three runs scored at the plate. Collin Sevigny chipped in two hits. Jack Joyce had two hits and Theo Adams hit a double for Kennebunk. Sanford, now 12-5, advances to play third-seeded Cheverus in the quarterfinals. Kennebunk finishes at 6-11.
York 5, Wells 4 The eighth-seeded York Wildcats erased a deficit with a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth, beating the ninth-seeded Wells Warriors 5-4 in a Class B South preliminary-round game in York. Sam Jancovic drove in the tying run with a single and scored the winner on an infield single by Alex Dimino. Wells had grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run homer by Owen Bonenfant. York answered when Robbie Hanscom singled and came home on a hit by Henry Ober. Aydan Collins added a solo homer for Wells in the third, and Orrin Culp Dechant drove in two with a single in the bottom half for York. Hanscom went the distance on the mound, allowing four earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. York, now 10-7, moves on to face top-seeded Fryeburg Academy in the quarterfinals. Wells finishes at 7-10.
Scarborough 3, Marshwood 2 The fifth-seeded Scarborough Red Storm rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, walking off with a 3-2 victory over the 12th-seeded Marshwood Hawks in a Class A South preliminary-round game in Scarborough. Cam Dean, who took over in relief and pitched the final six innings, scored the winning run on a single by Kayson Cyr. Marshwood had taken a 2-1 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Patrick Guite led Scarborough with three hits, while Cyr and Finn Coburn each added two. Jack Eardley had two hits for Marshwood. Michael Sbrizza struck out seven in a complete-game effort for the Hawks. Scarborough, now 12-4-1, advances to face fourth-seeded Thornton Academy in the quarterfinals. Marshwood ends its season at 5-12.
Softball
South Portland 8, Marshwood/Berwick/Traip 4 Jillian Edgar went 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored, leading the seventh-seeded South Portland Red Riots to an 8-4 win over the 10th-seeded Marshwood/Berwick/Traip Hawks in a Class A South preliminary-round softball game in South Portland. Rachel DiMauro also collected three hits, including a triple, and drove in two. The Red Riots jumped out to a 5-1 lead with two runs in the first and three in the second. Laurali Shisler was 2 for 4 with two runs scored for the Hawks, who closed within 5-4 in the fifth before South Portland tacked on one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to seal it. South Portland, now 11-6, moves on to face second-seeded Bonny Eagle in the quarterfinals. The Hawks finish at 6-11.
Greely 14, Yarmouth 4 CJ Gorham went 3 for 3 with three RBI and three runs scored, Quinn Simpson launched a two-run homer, and the eighth-seeded Greely Rangers pulled away for a five-inning mercy-rule victory over the ninth-seeded Yarmouth Clippers in a Class B South preliminary-round game in Cumberland. Simpson, Avery Enos and Katie Wallace each finished with two hits, with Enos driving in three and Wallace adding two RBI and two runs scored. Greely broke the game wide open with an eight-run fourth inning. Tessie Sanford-Wardwell was 2 for 2 with two RBI and two runs scored for Yarmouth. Greely, now 12-5, advances to play top-seeded Medomak Valley in the quarterfinals. Yarmouth finishes at 9-8.
Girls Lacrosse
Windham 22, South Portland 2 Abby Trainor poured in seven goals and dished out four assists, powering the third-seeded Windham Eagles to a 22-2 rout of the 14th-seeded South Portland Red Riots in a Class A preliminary-round game in Windham. Neve Ledbetter contributed three goals and four assists, while Brooklyn Roy, Olivia McPherson and Mady Donnelly each added three goals for the defending state champions. Charlie Savage and Donnelly Maloji scored for South Portland. Windham improves to 13-2 and advances, while the Red Riots finish at 4-11.
Mt. Ararat 8, Westbrook 5 Avery Creek scored three goals, Jaelyn Jensen and Mia Madsen each added two, and the 10th-seeded Mt. Ararat Eagles upset the seventh-seeded Westbrook Blue Blazes 8-5 in a Class B preliminary-round game in Westbrook. Lyla Dunphe scored twice for Westbrook. Mt. Ararat, last year's state runner-up and now 7-8, advances to face second-seeded Messalonskee in the quarterfinals. Westbrook ends at 10-5.
Freeport 17, Hampden Co-op 1 Keeley Furtney scored three goals, Karleigh Costello, Isla Pattershall and Ella Tracy each found the net twice, and eight other players added one goal apiece as the sixth-seeded Freeport Falcons dismantled the 11th-seeded Hampden/Brewer/George Stevens/Hermon co-op 17-1 in a Class B preliminary-round game in Freeport. Gracyn Haskell scored the lone goal for the Hampden co-op. Freeport, the reigning state champions and now 9-6, moves on to face third-seeded Camden Hills in the quarterfinals. The Hampden co-op finishes at 6-9.
