Maine High‑School Sports Week in Review

The sun‑lit fields and buzzing bleachers of Maine’s small towns hosted an electric weekend of high‑school competition, from dramatic last‑second football drives to decisive soccer shutouts and tight field‑hockey finishes. Below is a roundup of the top games and standout performances from the weekend.

Friday Night Football: Gorham Upsets Scarborough

In the Class A South showdown in Gorham, Isaac Vail was the star of the show. With just 1:09 remaining on the clock, Vail returned a kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown, setting the stage for an 11‑yard catch that sealed a 28‑21 victory over Scarborough. Vail finished the game with two touchdown receptions, both thrown by quarterback Wyatt Walker, who also rushed for a one‑yard score. The Rams’ offense was capped by a six‑yard run from freshman Vante Conant.

Scarborough, who entered the game with a 0‑7 record, fought hard after a 14‑0 halftime deficit. They pulled within a point at 21‑20 with 1:26 left, thanks to a second touchdown run by Ozzy Bodah and a passing score from Oscar Goss to Brandon Brady. It would be the third straight loss for Scarborough, after a double‑overtime defeat to Edward Little and a late‑touchdown loss to Sanford. The Rams’ defense held strong in the final minutes to preserve the win.

Football: Other Big Wins

Lawrence vs. Camden Hills (40‑14)
Lawrence, the No. 3 team in the Varsity Maine Top 10, used a late surge to pull away from the Camden Hills Bulldogs. Jaiden Hebert exploded for three touchdown runs, turning a 20‑14 deficit into a decisive win. The Bulldogs’ early lead came when Jackson Chontos connected on a 13‑yard pass to Braden Beveridge. Lawrence answered with a 20‑yard run by Kayleb Gerow and a 34‑yard run by Hebert that put them up 13‑7 at halftime. The Bulldogs, who finished the season undefeated, finished the game 7‑0.

Old Orchard Beach vs. Maranacook (60‑12)

Brayden Koelker added two long runs, while Gabe Jefferds returned an interception 39 yards for a score. The Seagulls (7‑0) were relentless, while Maranacook’s Keldon Vandoren‑Wilkinson opened the game with a 35‑yard touchdown pass to Fenway Lowe, but the turnover on the opening kickoff set the tone.
