Portland, Maine — Saturday’s slate of high‑school athletics was a veritable showcase of skill and determination, with teams from across the state turning out to compete in football, field hockey, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and volleyball. Cheverus College High School secured a convincing 37‑25 victory over Falmouth in a Class B South football contest, while other schools posted hard‑fought wins in their respective sports.

Cheverus Claims Football Supremacy

The Cheverus Stags out‑scored the Falmouth Navigators in a 37‑25 triumph at a packed stadium in Portland. The game opened with a 39‑yard rushing touchdown by Cheverus’ Jackson Holmes, followed by a 66‑yard interception return for a touchdown by Kevin True, which gave the Stags a 21‑0 cushion in the first quarter. Holmes’ 39‑yard run and True’s return were the first of two long scoring passes from quarterback Colton Jewett to receiver AJ Lauture, who capped the first period with a 46‑yard touchdown reception.

Falmouth’s quarterback Micah Derrig answered with a 14‑yard run‑to‑end‑zone touchdown on the final play of the quarter. Jewett and Lauture connected again in the second quarter for a 45‑yard touchdown, but Falmouth cut the deficit to 28‑13 when Derrig found Blake Kingsley for a 22‑yard pass with only three seconds left before halftime.

In the second half, Holmes extended the lead with a 36‑yard field goal, then sealed the game by intercepting a Derrig pass at the goal line and returning it 100 yards for a touchdown. Cheverus’ balanced attack and defensive prowess earned them a solid win in the Class B South showdown.
