Here’s what to know about each Maine girls lacrosse state title game

The Maine high school spring sports season reaches its conclusion with two days of excitement, as 14 state champions will be crowned Friday and Saturday. Some teams are hoping to win their first state title, while others are trying to repeat, and a few are seeking revenge after losing to the same foes in last year’s state finals.
We asked Varsity Maine reporters for something important to know about each state championship game matchup. Here’s what they had to say about the girls lacrosse finals.
Class A: Kennebunk (15-1) vs. Thornton Academy (14-2)
One word: possession. It’s the key in any lacrosse game, and the best way to gain it is to win on the draw. Thornton’s Oceanna LaMarre dominated in that department as the second-seeded Golden Trojans built an 8-1 semifinal lead en route to knocking out defending champion Windham, 11-8, and reaching their first girls lacrosse championship game. Top-seeded Kennebunk (15-1) is in its ninth title game since 2015. The Rams struggled in the draw circle in their 13-12 overtime win against Cheverus in the semifinals (and in their lone loss, to Windham). Based on the way Thornton played defense against Windham, goals won’t come easily, so Kennebunk needs to at least break even in the possession department.

Class B: Greely (14-2) vs. Freeport (11-6)
Can Freeport cap a magical run? After ending the regular season with an 8-6 record, the No. 6 Falcons pulled off upset victories — at least in terms of seeds — over No. 3 Camden Hills and No. 2 Messalonskee. Freeport fell 10-9 to its state final opponent on April 24 but proved it can hang with the top-seeded Rangers, who are trying to win their fourth state championship in five seasons.
Class C: Maranacook/Winthrop (16-0) vs. North Yarmouth Academy (13-3)
Maranacook/Winthrop has bulldozed its way past its opponents this postseason, scoring 41 goals in two games. Standing between the Black Bears and their second consecutive state title is NYA, whom they beat by one goal, 10-9, in the two finalists’ only regular-season meeting May 12.
