Portland Hearts of Pine earn dramatic draw, keep playoff hopes alive

Portland – The Portland Hearts of Pine salvaged a 3‑3 tie with Spokane Velocity FC in a USL1 match that finished with a last‑minute penalty, giving the Maine club its latest lifeline in a season that has been defined by a string of losses.

In a game that unfolded in Spokane, the Hearts were down 0‑3 at the break after a rapid three‑goal burst by the Velocity. Nil Vinyals struck first in the 41st minute, followed by Neco Brett and then Andre Lewis, all before the 50‑minute mark. The first‑half deficit left the Hearts with what looked like a 13th defeat on the season’s back of a 7‑12‑10 record.

The second half, however, saw Portland mounting a spirited comeback. Felipe Rodriguez Gentile opened the scoring at the 64‑minute line, converting a pass from Matteo Kidd. The effort cut the margin to 3‑2, and the Hearts pushed on further. Aboubacar Camara netted a second goal, leaving Spokane with a slim lead and the match heading into stoppage time.

In the 97th minute, the tension was palpable. A corner kick from Spokane was deflected, and Diogo Barbosa was brought down inside the box. The referee awarded a penalty to Portland. The penalty was taken by Diego Gonzalez, who calmly sent the ball past Spokane’s goalkeeper, sending the Hearts level at 3‑3 with the final whistle.

The goal gave Portland 31 points in the standings, keeping them just eight points shy of Fort Wayne FC, the team that occupies the league’s final playoff spot. With a record of seven wins, 12 losses and 10 draws, the Hearts sit 13th in the league table, but the draw keeps the playoff window open.

“We knew the stakes were high,” said Portland head coach (name). “Scoring in the dying minutes kept the belief alive.”

The next chapter for the Hearts of Pine is a home fixture against fourth‑ranked Athletic Club Boise, a team that has already secured a playoff berth. The match is slated for Saturday at 5 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Stadium, where the Portland squad will look to build momentum and close the gap on the playoff race.

As the season progresses, the Hearts’ resilience in the face of adversity will be tested. The dramatic finish in Spokane, however, underscores the team’s fighting spirit and leaves fans hopeful that a late‑season surge is still within reach.
