Maine’s New Women’s Soccer Team Gets a Legend on Its Advisory Board

Portland, Maine – The Portland Hearts of Pine, a professional men’s soccer franchise that has been a staple of the Maine sports scene, announced today that former U.S. women’s national team star Michelle Akers will serve as a founding advisor for its upcoming pre‑professional women’s squad, slated to begin play in 2027.

Akers, who retired from professional play in 2000, helped the United States win back‑to‑back FIFA Women’s World Cups in 1991 and 1999. The former forward and midfielder was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2014 and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers who helped elevate women’s soccer in the United States.

The announcement comes after two years of collaboration between Akers and the Hearts of Pine organization. In 2025 she appeared on the pitch for a pre‑game coin flip and later rallied in the stands with Dirigo Union supporters, wearing the team’s alternate orange‑and‑black camo jersey. Earlier this year she joined a virtual forum to discuss the prospects for a women’s team in Maine, offering insights from her extensive experience on and off the field.

According to the team’s press release, Akers’ advisory duties will focus on “shaping the women’s team’s foundation, its sporting identity, culture, and long‑term vision.” Her presence is expected to lend credibility and attract talent as the club builds a competitive and community‑oriented program.

The announcement will be followed by a public appearance from Akers at the Hearts of Pine’s third “Heartsapalooza” celebration. The event will take place on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. at Thompson’s Point, a popular waterfront location in Portland. Admission to the gathering is free, and fans can meet Akers, learn more about the upcoming squad, and enjoy live music and local food vendors.

The Portland Hearts of Pine, which competes in the National Independent Soccer Association, have been expanding their brand beyond men’s soccer. The new women’s pre‑professional team aims to become a cornerstone of Maine’s sports culture, offering a pathway for local talent to pursue a professional career.

For those interested in attending Heartsapalooza or learning more about the new team, the Portland Hearts of Pine website lists additional details, including schedule changes and ticket information.
