Portland resident backs Hannah Pingree in 2026 governor’s race

In a letter to the editorial board of the Portland Press Herald this week, Michael Sutton—an accountant and longtime resident of Portland—endorsed Democratic candidate Hannah Pingree for Maine’s 2026 gubernatorial election. Sutton’s letter, published on the paper’s website, highlighted Pingree’s record on social‑service programs, her experience in state government and her opposition to cuts in Medicaid and food‑assistance programs.

Sutton wrote that he was “terrified that I may lose my MaineCare” after the Republican‑controlled legislature proposed a reduction in Medicaid benefits last year. He said Pingree had “stood up to powerful interests” by fighting those cuts, and that she had “kept healthcare access high and costs low for people.” The letter also noted that when the federal government “decided to make SNAP payments difficult last fall,” Pingree was among “those that advocated for the release of the funds so people, like me, can get paid on time.”

“Affordability in Maine means being able to pay the bills and put food on the table,” Sutton wrote. He added that the Republican candidate, state Rep. Bobby Charles, “is Trump 2.0” and “does everything Trump tells him to do.” In contrast, Sutton praised Pingree’s “fearless advocacy and proven record of standing up to powerful interests,” arguing that the state needs leaders who “turn challenges into opportunities for Maine communities.”

Pingree, a longtime state senator who has served in the legislature since 2004, has built a reputation as a centrist Democrat who works across the aisle. She has overseen the expansion of the MaineCare program and has pushed for increased funding for child‑care, senior services and rural broadband. In 2025 she announced her candidacy for governor, citing the need to “protect Maine families, fight corporate greed, all the while bringing people together around solutions and getting things done.”

The election, which will be held on November 3, 2026, pits Pingree against Bobby Charles, a Republican state representative who has been praised by some for his conservative stance on taxes and business regulation. The campaign has already turned on economic issues, Medicaid spending and federal‑state relations, with both candidates calling for policies that would improve job growth and infrastructure.

Sutton’s letter, which was one of many from constituents in the lead‑up to the primary, illustrates the growing polarization in Maine’s politics. “Maine needs tough leaders,” Sutton wrote, “and Hannah Pingree has spent nearly 25 years taking on the biggest challenges to protect Maine families.” The letter is part of the paper’s ongoing coverage of the 2026 election, which includes commentary, polling data and candidate interviews.
