Hannaford app, website offline as parent company addresses security issue

Hannaford’s website and mobile app have been temporarily shut down as the supermarket chain’s parent company addresses a cybersecurity issue.

Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch company that owns the Scarborough-based grocer, said in a brief news release Monday that it was experiencing an internal network issue and had taken some systems offline to protect them.

That includes the Hannaford app and website, both of which carried messages Tuesday morning that they were unavailable.

Stores remain open as usual, and any unfulfilled online orders will be refunded.

The company said Tuesday that the measures were precautionary and that, although the investigation is ongoing, there is no evidence to suggest that customer or employee data was compromised.

Ahold Delhaize did not provide a timeline for when online service was expected to be restored but said teams are “working with urgency” and were starting controlled relaunches of some systems. A Hannaford spokesperson reiterated that the company is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding,” Hannaford spokesperson Caitlin Cortelyou said in a written statement Tuesday.

Ahold Delhaize says it has contacted outside cybersecurity experts to help with its response and is “engaging with the appropriate authorities” as necessary.

“As the investigation is ongoing, we are not sharing further details that could compromise security measures or interfere with our response efforts,” the company added.

If the cybersecurity issue is deemed to have been a data breach, then Maine law requires it to be reported to the Office of the Maine Attorney General. The office did not immediately respond to an email Tuesday asking whether it had received any reports about this issue.

Ahold Delhaize is one of the world’s largest food retailers and operates more than 2,000 U.S. stores under several brands, including Stop & Shop, Food Lion and Giant Food.
