International Supermarkets Deliver Savings and Flavor, Says Experts

Maine’s grocery shoppers are turning to international supermarkets for both budget‑friendly bargains and culinary inspiration. Recent research and expert commentary point to a steady rise in sales for these specialty stores—part of a broader trend toward more culturally diverse shopping destinations across the United States.

A Growing Market

IBISWorld data cited by the Associated Press shows that in 2024, international supermarkets and other small grocery stores generated $55.8 billion in revenue. The industry has grown about 3 % per year since 2019, and analysts project that it will reach $64 billion by 2029. Demographic changes—especially the growth of Asian and Hispanic populations—along with younger consumers’ appetite for new flavors are the main drivers behind this expansion.

Do They Really Save Money?

The answer, according to Barbara E. Kahn, a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, depends on how shoppers shop. “Savvy shoppers can compare and see whether or not they’re getting good deals,” Kahn says. She notes that stores that cater to specialized segments can lower stocking costs and pass savings on to customers. “On the other hand, it’s possible that some of these specialized international markets are stocking premium products that you can’t get anywhere else, so there’s an exclusivity aspect to it, and some of those prices might be higher,” she adds.

Kahn’s research indicates that savings are most often found in specific product categories—such as fresh produce, spices, and specialty meats—rather than across the board. Shoppers who keep an eye on price variations and take advantage of bulk deals can still walk away with a lighter grocery bill, even while exploring new ingredients.

Culinary Inspiration in Every Aisle

Beyond the price tags, international supermarkets offer a cultural experience that can transform everyday meals. Palina Louangketh, director of the Idaho Museum of International Diaspora, says that a visit to a foreign‑market “gives you both a dose of cultural experience and healthy, fresh exotic ingredients.” She encourages shoppers to pair proteins with vegetables, starches, and savory sauces—such as soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, or hoisin sauce—to create quick, flavorful dishes.

Beryl Shereshewsky, a New York‑based video producer who runs a YouTube channel exploring global food cultures, recommends a simple approach: “Look at something you really like and see the iterations of it around the world.” By adding just a couple of new ingredients, she says, a familiar dish can become something fresh and exciting.

Shereshewsky also points out that international markets can be hidden gems. “I think you would be surprised by how many international markets exist, even in small towns and cities,” she notes. “Everywhere you go in America, you’re going to find immigrants, and those immigrants are still cooking their foods from their countries and cultures.”

Tips for a Successful Visit

Experts suggest a few strategies to maximize both savings and the cooking experience:

  • Do Your Homework – Research recipes ahead of time and make a clear shopping list.
  • Compare Prices – Bring a phone or print out price lists from other stores to benchmark deals.
  • Explore Beyond Your Neighborhood – Don’t limit yourself to the nearest supermarket; there may be a hidden international market just a few miles away.
  • Start Simple – Use the sauces and spices you already love as a bridge to new ingredients.

A Blend of Budget and Culture

For Maine residents looking for ways to stretch their grocery budget while adding a dash of global flavor, international supermarkets offer a compelling option. While the savings may vary by product category, the opportunity to experiment with fresh ingredients and cultural dishes can make every meal an adventure. As the industry continues to grow, it’s likely that even the smallest towns will see more of these specialty stores, inviting locals to explore the world from their own backyards.
