GOP Holds First‑Ever Midterm Convention in Dallas, Aiming to Energize Base Ahead of 2024 Elections

Dallas, Texas – In a move that marks the first time the Republican Party has convened a midterm‑only gathering, President Donald Trump and GOP leaders hosted a two‑night convention at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas this week. The event, billed as “a truly Historic Event” and “a RALLY like none other,” was designed to rally the party’s base and spotlight Republican achievements over the past two years in the lead‑up to the midterm elections slated for November 2024.

The Convention’s Structure and Speakers

Trump appeared on both nights, delivering a keynote address on Wednesday evening and a follow‑up speech on Thursday. Vice President J.D. Vance, who is widely regarded as a rising star within the party, opened the second night’s program. Other prominent speakers included:

  • U.S. Representative Mike Johnson (Louisiana), House Speaker and keynote for the event.
  • Attorney General Todd Blanche.
  • Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
  • Medicaid and Medicare Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.
  • Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner.
  • Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
  • Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son.

The Senate Majority Leader, John Thune (South Dakota), was not listed among the official speakers, although a source told Fox News Digital that he would attend Dallas for a full day of fundraising activities for Senate candidates.

GOP Rationale

Republican leaders view the convention as a strategic effort to counter Democratic gains in the House and Senate. RNC Chair Joe Gruters said the party “has a chance to defy history and win the midterms,” emphasizing the GOP’s advantage in campaign finances. Gruters also highlighted the party’s record on tax cuts, arguing that the convention would showcase the administration’s economic achievements.

House Speaker Mike Johnson framed the event as a “competition against communism,” underscoring the GOP’s narrative of a “contrast election” between what he described as “common‑sense solutions” and “really crazy” Democratic policies.

Democratic Perspective

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) chose not to hold a similar midterm convention. DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer criticized the GOP’s event as a “multi‑million dollar celebration” that distracts voters from pressing concerns such as the cost of living, inflation, and the war in Iran. “While everyday Americans struggle to pay their bills, fill up their tanks, or put food on the table, Republicans are hosting a multi‑million dollar celebration to satisfy an aging and erratic Trump and tie vulnerable Republican candidates closer to his failed agenda,” Witmer said.

Financial Motive and Fundraising

The convention also served as a fundraising platform. Reports indicate that donors were asked to contribute more than $88,000 for a private photo opportunity with Trump at a roundtable event. According to Fox Business, the RNC has a significant cash advantage over Democrats and plans to deploy those funds to secure congressional majorities.

Political Context

The GOP faces several headwinds in the midterm cycle. Trump’s approval ratings have dipped below 30%, and inflation remains a top concern for voters. The party’s current slim majority in the House and Senate leaves it vulnerable to losses. The DNC, which is in debt, has positioned itself to exploit these vulnerabilities by highlighting the economic challenges Americans face.

Meanwhile, Republican strategists, such as former RNC communications director Doug Heye, have expressed cautious optimism. Heye noted that while the “implementation is important,” a focus that “falls flat” on Trump rather than the issues voters care about could limit the convention’s impact. He cautioned that the event should emphasize the GOP’s record on lowering prices and securing economic gains to resonate with voters.

Looking Ahead

With less than two months to go before the November midterms, the Dallas convention is a high‑profile attempt by Republicans to energize supporters and counter the Democratic narrative. Whether the rally will translate into higher voter turnout remains uncertain, as polls continue to show that many voters, particularly those with low turnout propensity, may not head to the polls in the absence of a presidential candidate on the ballot.

As the election cycle ramps up, both parties are likely to intensify their messaging and fundraising efforts, with the Dallas convention marking a key moment in the GOP’s strategy to maintain control of Congress.
