Gaming-world veteran who ripped ‘woke’ culture scores Trump-backed battleground primary win

Trump-Backed Video Game Composer Advances in Nevada Congressional Primary
A former composer for two of the most successful video game franchises in history will now face a Democratic incumbent in one of Nevada's most competitive congressional districts.
Marty O'Donnell, who crafted the musical scores for the iconic "Halo" series and the blockbuster game "Destiny," won his Republican primary in Nevada's 3rd Congressional District and will challenge Democratic Representative Susie Lee in the November general election.
O'Donnell secured the nomination with significant Republican backing, having earned endorsements from former President Donald Trump and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo. The candidates will now compete for a seat that has flip-flopped between parties in recent election cycles.
A Battleground District
Nevada's 3rd Congressional District encompasses suburban communities in the Las Vegas area, a region that has become a bellwether for statewide and national elections. The district's voter preferences have shifted dramatically over the past decade.
Trump carried the district in both his 2016 presidential victory and his 2024 return to the White House. However, the district proved crucial to Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 presidential win, when he flipped the seat. Lee has held the congressional seat since 2019, winning close races in a district that has proven receptive to both parties.
Contrasting Backgrounds
The matchup pits two candidates with distinctly different resumes against one another.
O'Donnell brings recognition from his work on video games that have sold tens of millions of copies since the original "Halo" launched in 2001. The franchise, centered on humanity's struggle against alien invaders, became one of the most enduring in gaming history. His work on "Destiny" further established him in the entertainment industry.
Lee, a former second-grade teacher, emphasizes her background in education and advocacy for families. She has positioned herself as a moderate Democrat focused on kitchen-table issues, particularly the cost of living and healthcare access.
Policy Positions
The candidates represent divergent visions for the district and the country.
O'Donnell has built his campaign around what he calls "America First" policies, emphasizing support for small businesses, families, and community safety. He backs tax cuts, reduced regulations, and what he describes as aggressive energy policies. He supports stricter immigration controls, including completion of a border wall and measures targeting human and drug trafficking.
Lee has focused on healthcare costs and education funding. She opposes eliminating the Department of Education and has advocated for increased federal investment in public schools, special education programs, and after-school initiatives. While she has occasionally supported enhanced border security measures, she opposes efforts to restrict birthright citizenship and has criticized aspects of Trump's immigration approach.
The Trump Factor
In endorsing O'Donnell, Trump drew sharp contrasts between the candidates.
Trump praised O'Donnell as a "World-Class Composer and Entrepreneur" who would pursue policies to create jobs, cut taxes, and advance American manufacturing. The former president criticized Lee for her positions on border security, Second Amendment rights, and fiscal matters.
"Susie Lee wants Open Borders, Men playing in Women's Sports, Transgender for Everyone, Defund the Police, and wants to take away your Second Amendment," Trump wrote in his endorsement announcement. "She voted against the Biggest Tax Cut in History."
Lee's campaign has highlighted her work on issues affecting working families and her independent approach to governance.
A Different Kind of Campaign
O'Donnell has brought an unusual background to his political ambitions, drawing connections between his creative career and his political philosophy. He has spoken publicly about what he perceives as parallels between opposition to progressive ideologies in the gaming industry and broader cultural and political movements.
The candidate has argued that audiences, whether gamers or voters, ultimately reject content or policies imposed without their input.
Political observers will be watching whether O'Donnell's celebrity status and outsider background can translate into victory in a district that has shown willingness to support either party in recent years.
