Former Democratic Fundraiser Lindy Li Publishes Memoir Revealing Internal Debate on President Biden’s Health

Lindy Li, once one of the Democratic Party’s most prolific fundraisers, announced in October that she has switched her party affiliation to independent and is now working on a new book that will detail the party’s handling of President Joe Biden’s cognitive health.

Li, a Princeton alumna who served as the school’s only female class president for four years, grew up in New England after her family fled China in the 1970s. Her great‑grandfather was reportedly killed by the Chinese Communist Party, and the family eventually settled in Boston before moving to New Haven and then Pennsylvania where her father worked as a doctor.

After a brief stint in finance, Li was drawn to politics after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. “I felt in my heart that I was supposed to help do whatever I could to save those kids,” she said. “That conviction pushed me into public life.”

Li’s early political ambition was to run for Congress at the age of 24, a plan she recalls with a mixture of confidence and uncertainty. “I just knew that I was supposed to run for Congress. But I didn’t know I was supposed to do it at twenty‑four years old,” she told reporters.

Instead of running, Li turned to fundraising. She began building relationships with Democratic operatives in the mid‑2010s. In 2016, she raised nearly $515,000 for the presidential campaign, and in 2018 she raised an additional $168,000. “I didn’t intend to become a fundraiser,” she reflected. “It’s a lot of salesmanship, and I hated it. I hate it. And I also know I’m very good at it.”

The work took her to the front lines of the 2020 and 2024 campaigns for President Biden and Vice‑presidential nominee Kamala Harris. She worked closely with figures such as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Tammy Duckworth, cultivating a reputation for loyalty and tenacity. “If somebody’s kind to me, I will go to the ends of the earth for them,” Li said. “You have to give me a reason to walk away from you.”

Her sense of loyalty, however, was put to the test in 2024. As the president’s health concerns grew more public, Li reported seeing the party’s messaging shift toward portraying Biden as fully capable of serving a second term. “I saw the party selling donors and voters on the idea that President Biden could serve effectively for another four years despite mounting concerns about his cognitive abilities,” she said.

In September, Li published the memoir Unburdened through HarperCollins. The book claims to reveal internal conversations about Biden’s age and the political liabilities associated with it. “I want to expose Democrats who covered up Biden’s decline,” Li told a press conference. “It’s time to set the record straight.”

The release of the book severed Li’s relationships with many of her former Democratic allies. She said she lost an eight‑year romantic partnership as a direct result of the controversy. “That book even cost me a personal romantic relationship of eight years,” she admitted. She also noted that her ties with Gov. Shapiro and other key figures have been strained, though she believes Shapiro would understand her decision.

Li’s future political trajectory remains uncertain. She has suggested that she might eventually run for the Senate, but that would be a decade away. In recent comments, she said she could “solidify my hand on a hundred million dollars” if the opportunity arose, but she is not yet sure what her next step will be. “I’m no longer going to half‑heartedly support anybody. I learned my lesson about Biden and Harris. So I’m just waiting,” she said.

The former fundraiser’s memoir has drawn attention from political observers and the media, who are closely watching how her revelations could impact the Democratic Party’s narrative about President Biden. Meanwhile, Li continues to keep her political future open, describing her worldview as “realpolitik with Lindy characteristics” and indicating that she will no longer accept the party’s messaging without scrutiny.

Li’s story reflects a broader conversation about intra‑party accountability and the role of political fundraising in shaping electoral outcomes. Whether she chooses to return to a political
