Salamone scores 3 times in second half, lifts South Portland past Scarborough 20-13

SCARBOROUGH — Christopher Salamone ran for three touchdowns in the second half, and South Portland’s defense stopped Scarborough at the 1-yard line in the closing seconds to secure a 20-13 win Friday night in a Class A South matchup.

Scarborough (0-3) took a 13-0 lead early in the third quarter when Mitch McGarry jumped a route and returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. But Salamone answered with a 53-yard scoring run to get the Red Riots on the board.

Salamone struck again in the fourth quarter, going up the middle for a 35-yard touchdown, and Christian Beausang’s extra point gave South Portland (1-2) its first lead at 14-13. He saved his biggest moment for late, scoring from 6 yards out with 2:24 remaining. South Portland went for a two-point conversion to make it a two-score game, but the pass fell incomplete.

That gave Scarborough one last chance. The Red Storm quickly moved into South Portland territory, and a pass interference penalty set up first-and-goal at the 4. The Red Riots' defense held firm, stopping Scarborough at the 1 on back-to-back plays. On third down with 15 seconds remaining, an illegal procedure penalty pushed the ball back to the 6. Quarterback Oscar Goss scrambled out of the pocket and was tackled at the 1, and with no timeouts left, Scarborough couldn’t stop the clock.

The first half belonged to Scarborough, which controlled the ball for more than 10 minutes on its opening drive and finished it with Evan Moore’s 2-yard touchdown run.
