A man died Wednesday evening after crashing his motorcycle on Interstate 295 in Freeport, according to Maine State Police.

Authorities responded to the scene near mile marker 18 around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. An initial investigation determined that Edmund Goodman, 78, of Freeport, was driving northbound on his motorcycle when he went off the road, striking a raised edge on the shoulder.

Goodman’s motorcycle flipped over, and he was thrown from the vehicle, police spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release Thursday.

Moss said several passersby with medical training stopped and tried to save Goodman’s life, but he died from his injuries at the scene.

Investigators believe Goodman likely suffered a medical event, causing the crash, Moss said. No other vehicles were involved.

State police are investigating the crash. First responders from Yarmouth and the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
