Fossel came up short on Trump slush fund | Letter

I read Jim Fossel’s column every week. He seems to have researched and thought things out in depth. While I do not always agree with him, at least his comments are thought-provoking. In the May 24 Maine Sunday Telegram, [Fossel went point-by-point](https://www.pressherald.com/2026/05/24/unfortunately-trumps-new-fund-is-perfectly-legal-jim-fossel/) arguing why everything President Trump did to get his gigantic slush fund and his get-out-of-jail-free-forever card with the IRS, by giving up a frivolous lawsuit, was all technically legal, if outrageous. Fossel said the best anybody could do is get Congress to change the law so that no one else could do that in the future. Sadly, he almost had me convinced.   Apparently, the columnist did not dig deep enough to see beyond the Trump claims. Multiple members of the mass media reported it was [not all that bulletproof.](https://www.cato.org/blog/what-can-be-done-about-president-trumps-slush-fund) Recently, a federal judge [temporarily](https://apnews.com/article/trump-settlement-fund-irs-lawsuit-192550667b662f1a2f8572c0ccb846a3) blocked its operations while pending litigation challenges it. **Harvey Versteeg** _Augusta_ Copy the Story Link Tagged: [letter to the editor](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/letter-to-the-editor/)
