Former RSU 67 employee accused of stealing more than $10K from Lincoln school district

Former RSU 67 Payroll Clerk Arrested on Felony Theft Charges
Lincoln, Maine – A former Regional School Unit 67 employee has been arrested on Tuesday on charges that could bring up to ten years in prison. Adam Mahaney, 43, of Lincoln, was taken into custody by the Lincoln Police Department after an investigation that began last month.
Mahaney served as the district’s payroll clerk and accounts‑receivable specialist from May 2025 until he left on August 17. While handling the district’s payroll, he allegedly made a series of unauthorized transfers that totaled more than $10,000, according to the police. The district discovered the suspicious transactions only after Mahaney’s departure and immediately notified law‑enforcement.
Mahaney faces two felony counts: theft by unauthorized taking or transfer (Class B) and misuse of entrusted property (Class C). A Class B felony carries up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000; a Class C felony carries up to five years and a fine of up to $5,000.
The investigation was set in motion when Superintendent Mike Harvey contacted the police on suspicion of financial irregularities linked to the former employee. RSU 67 released a statement on Wednesday saying it is “fully cooperating with investigators and has taken steps to safeguard its financial accounts,” adding that Mahaney is “no longer associated with RSU 67 in any capacity.”
In the statement, the district’s board added, “The board of directors and administration of Regional School Unit No. 67 believe in the importance of maintaining the public’s trust through ensuring public funds are not misused and will prosecute any incidents of this nature to the full extent of the law.”
Attempts to reach Mahaney on Wednesday night were unsuccessful. The district has not confirmed whether he resigned or was terminated when he left his payroll position.
Mahaney also previously coached the Mattanawcook Academy boys’ basketball team and directed the Old Town Recreation Center, according to local reports.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Lincoln Police Department at 207‑794‑8455.
