Former Mt. Ararat Art Teacher Sentenced to Nine Months Behind Bars for Child‑Pornography Charges

NATHAN VALENTINE, a 33‑year‑old former art and STEAM teacher at Mt. Ararat middle and high schools in Portland, pleaded guilty on Friday to a Class C felony for possessing sexually explicit images of a child under 12. The plea was entered in Cumberland County Superior Court, where he was sentenced to nine months in prison, with the balance of a four‑year sentence suspended. He will also serve two years of probation, register as a sex offender, and may not contact any child under 16.

Valentine first came under investigation in January 2025 after Google notified the Portland Police Department’s computer‑crimes unit of pornographic material found in a Google Drive account linked to his personal email. The files were determined to be child‑sexual‑exploitation material. Police subsequently opened a criminal investigation, and Valentine was arrested in February after failing to appear in court.

He had left the district on May 17, the day before Superintendent Heidi O’Leary announced the investigation into his conduct. O’Leary described the allegations as “deeply unsettling” but declined to provide further detail.

Maine School Administrative District 75 confirmed that Valentine had taught art and STEAM courses at Mt. Ararat. The district’s school board agenda lists him as a former teacher for those subjects.

The state’s law makes possession of child‑sexual‑exploitation material a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. In Valentine’s case, the court imposed a reduced sentence, taking into account his guilty plea.

Valentine’s attorney, Michael Whipple, did not respond to a request for comment.

The sentencing underscores the seriousness with which Maine treats offenses involving child sexual exploitation, and the district has reiterated its commitment to protecting students from such conduct.
