Former Israeli PM hails ‘heroism’ after passengers help thwart alleged cockpit attack

Brave Passengers, Crew Prevent Possible Attack as Dubai-to-Tel Aviv Flight Makes Emergency Landing
A routine passenger flight turned dramatic Wednesday when an alleged cockpit assault forced the aircraft into a steep descent, only to be stopped by the quick actions of fellow travelers and airline staff. The incident, investigated by authorities as a possible terrorist attack, ended with the suspected attacker subdued and the plane safely diverted to Saudi Arabia before continuing to Israel.
According to officials and passengers, the FlyDubai flight was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the pilot with a pocketknife and attempted to bring the plane down. The aircraft nosedived momentarily, triggering alarm among those on board.
“Israeli passengers sitting in the cabin didn’t hesitate,” said former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who spoke about the events on a national news program. “They jumped into the cockpit, tackled the alleged attacker, and kept him restrained until the second crew member could take over. This wasn’t a miracle. It was an act of heroism by the passengers and of the Emirati crew. It’s people who saved the day, people who showed courage, who didn’t stand passively but took action, and I’m so darn proud to be Israeli today.”
The situation deteriorated quickly in the air. A passenger who recorded part of the incident described hearing a commotion in the cockpit and seeing the pilot bleeding and clinging to an oxygen mask as the plane descended. Crew members fought to maintain control while travelers in the passenger section rushed to assist. Their efforts, along with the calm under pressure of the remaining flight staff, stabilized the aircraft.
After roughly 30 minutes of intense activity in the cockpit and cabin, the pilots declared an emergency and requested diversion. Saudi authorities in Tabuk cleared the plane to land, ensuring the safety of everyone on board. Both pilots were hospitalized with injuries, and the alleged attacker was taken into custody by Saudi security. Passengers were temporarily housed at the airport while arrangements were made for continued travel.
“Saudi officials were instrumental in managing the crisis on the ground,” Bennett noted. “They allowed the emergency landing, cared for those of us on board, and see to it that the suspect was questioned. Their cooperation was critical.”
When the plane was cleared to resume its journey, it headed toward Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement Wednesday praising those who intervened.
“I salute the heroes who showed extraordinary bravery and, according to the passenger’s account, saved many lives,” Netanyahu said, according to an unofficial translation of his remarks. “The pilot accused of carrying out the stabbing has been arrested and is being questioned by Saudi authorities. This incident reminds us that vigilance and swift action can make all the difference.”
Investigators continue to piece together the motive behind the attack. While no group has claimed responsibility, officials say the nature of the assault—targeting the flight deck in an effort to depressurize the cabin—is being treated with the utmost seriousness. The Saudi Public Prosecutor’s Office said the suspect is being questioned under terrorism-related statutes, though formal charges have not yet been filed.
The 200-plus passengers, many of them Israeli citizens returning home, deplaned to a mixture of relief and lingering disbelief. Some described the moments after landing as surreal, hugging strangers who had just minutes before been fighting for the plane’s safety.
“One minute we’re just trying to get home, the next there’s chaos in the front of the plane,” said one passenger, who asked not to be named. “But the people around me—the ones who jumped in, who helped restrain the man— they’re the reason we’re all standing here today. I’ll never forget it.”
The event has already sparked conversation about in-flight security protocols and the role of passengers in emergency situations. Aviation safety experts say the outcome underscores the importance of crew training and the sometimes-unsung bravery of travelers.
As the investigation moves forward, both Israeli and Saudi officials have reiterated their commitment to cooperating fully. For now, the flight’s arrival in Tel Aviv stands as a testament to quick thinking, communal courage, and the fragile balance of safety in modern air travel.
