Former '60 Minutes' honcho says CBS News leaders wanted staff to 'compromise our principles'

Former “60 Minutes” producer Guy Campanile broke his silence on Tuesday with a Facebook post that detailed why he believes he and several colleagues were let go from CBS News earlier this year. In the message, which he said was meant only for friends and family, Campanile wrote that he and his team refused to compromise their principles by inserting unverified claims or White House talking points into their reporting. He said they objected when instructed to conduct interviews arranged by the administration and insisted on asking tough questions of business and political leaders without fear or favor.

Campanile characterized the dismissals as a direct result of their commitment to journalistic independence. “We did what reporters worth their salt do – we questioned authority, including our own bosses,” he wrote. “That’s how the best newsrooms work. To be clear — we were told to leave because we insisted on doing our jobs.”

He also criticized what he described as a growing influence of online personalities within the newsroom. “Making matters worse is the cadre of self‑described influencers and online opinionists who market themselves as ‘journalists,’” Campanile said. “Some have been given control of our most precious reporting institutions — including CBS News. Many of these newsroom managers have never been exposed to the depths of poverty, the ravages of war or the heartbreak of disaster. Yet these dilettantes and their enablers make critical programming decisions based on what might trend online over the next few hours.”

The firings in May also affected executive producer Tanya Simon, executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, senior producer Matthew Polevoy and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. CBS said the moves were part of a broader reorganization led by editor‑in‑chief Bari Weiss aimed at refreshing the long‑running program. A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment on Campanile’s remarks, pointing instead to previous statements that denied allegations of political interference from former employees.

Campanile’s post continued with a warning to those still at the network: “As for my friends that remain at my former employer: Hold the line. Don’t give an inch because they will keep scraping away until there’s nothing left worth a …,” he wrote, trailing off. He later told Fox News Digital that the Facebook entry was never intended for public consumption.

Other notable departures followed. Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley was fired shortly after Campanile after a reported disagreement with Weiss and executive producer Nick Bilton over the show’s direction. Campanile noted that “60 Minutes” has aired segments critical of the Trump administration, including interviews with farmers opposed to tariffs and conversations with progressive American cardinals who challenged the administration’s immigration policies.

In the wake of the shakeup, a new “60 Minutes” producer has said they hope to curb the spread of unverified rumors that have leaked to the press. Campanile’s remarks have added to the ongoing debate about the balance between editorial independence and corporate oversight at one of television’s most venerable news programs.
