Florida State fires AD Michael Alford, as Mike Norvell’s seat reaches a boiling point in Tallahassee

Florida State fired athletic director Michael Alford on Monday morning, the university announced, elevating associate AD Bruce Warwick to the interim role as the Seminoles enter a period of transition.
The move follows a disappointing loss to SMU last week and a stadium power outage during that game in Tallahassee. More broadly, it reflects growing concern among boosters and officials about the direction of the athletic department, including fundraising and competitiveness.
Head football coach Mike Norvell, 39-35 overall, has gone 8-13 since the 2023 season, drawing vocal criticism from fans at Doak Campbell Stadium. The board of trustees faces a steep decision: firing Norvell would cost roughly $50 million.
Monday’s statement from board chairman Peter Collins emphasized restructuring. “We have made significant investments and structural changes in our athletics program and Seminole Boosters over the past few years, but more are needed. This step begins the next phase of restructuring that the University must commit to in order to compete in this era of college sports. The President and the Board are in lockstep on the mission and what the results must be.”
Alford was not hired by Norvell, but decisions during his tenure shaped the current landscape, including helping secure $380 million in stadium upgrades while the school remains mid-pack in conference revenue sharing. Florida State sued the ACC in 2023 over its grant of rights, eventually securing a reduced buyout that drops to $75 million after the 2029-30 season, fueling speculation about a potential move to the Big Ten or SEC.
With an upcoming game against Alabama this weekend, many inside the program question whether Norvell will last until November. The university’s next step will be hiring a permanent athletic director, who will likely determine whether Norvell remains.
