Nine Killed When Learjet 60 Crashes Near Palm Beach County

A private Learjet 60 plummeted into a residential area in South Florida Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people on board. The crash, which occurred around 12:50 p.m. near the Cresthaven neighborhood in Palm Beach County, has prompted an intensive investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Flight details

The aircraft departed Austin‑Bergstrom International Airport in Texas at 10:37 a.m. Sunday, bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Two crew members and seven passengers were aboard. At 12:47 p.m., the crew reported encountering light clear ice and moderate turbulence at 35 000 feet, with altitude variations of about 700 feet. They noted an outside temperature of –47 °C (–53 °F) and requested a climb to 37 000 feet after encountering precipitation; air‑traffic control approved the request.

Less than 30 seconds later, the crew reported descending and issued a mayday call. The transmission contained the phrase, “We are in an overspeed condition, descending,” after which the rest of the message was unclear. Subsequent communications indicated the jet was rapidly losing altitude before striking a roadway in a residential area.

Investigation focus

NTSB member Tom Chapman emphasized that weather conditions at altitude are a major focus of the investigation. “The weather conditions are a major focus of the investigation,” Chapman told reporters. He also said preliminary evidence suggests the aircraft was breaking apart before impact: “We do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact…we may find parts of the aircraft some distance away from the actual impact site.”

Investigators are also examining whether the reported icing and turbulence contributed to an overspeed condition or other structural failure. The NTSB’s on‑scene team, led by investigator‑in‑charge Timothy Manville, said the recovery effort will take several days. “The biggest obstacle that we're going to have is recovering the major wreckage from the impacted crater on the roadway,” Manville explained. The jet burst into a massive fireball upon impact, as captured on dash‑cam footage, and the crater on the road has complicated access to the wreckage.

Emergency response

The crash prompted the evacuation of roughly 600 residents from a nearby mobile‑home community. Local officials are still clearing the scene and assessing damage to the surrounding neighborhood. Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as “cataclysmic,” noting that the jet “looked like a missile going down” and left a large crater beside the road.

Current status

The cause of the crash remains undetermined. The NTSB has requested all relevant data, including flight‑data recorder and cockpit‑voice recorder outputs, from the aircraft manufacturer and the operator. The FAA is assisting with the investigation, coordinating the retrieval of wreckage and any recovered flight‑data. Families of the deceased are receiving support from local emergency services and state authorities.

Investigators will continue to analyze the wreckage, flight‑recording data, and weather conditions at 35 000–37 000 feet to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. The public is urged to stay away from the area while investigators work to reconstruct the final moments of the Learjet 60.
