Fire engulfs Chasse Marine Co. in Damariscotta

A major fire erupted at Chasse Marine Co. in Damariscotta on Friday morning.
The Damariscotta Fire Department responded to the business on Route 1 at 10:09 a.m. to find heavy flames, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Videos posted on social media showed a plume of black smoke billowing above the town and firefighters manning the hoses. Maj. Aaron Turcotte said in the release that one adult man went to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was released.
Investigators have determined that the fire was accidental, Turcotte said, but the exact source is still unclear.
Turcotte said they identified two possible options. A worker was performing grinding operations, and investigators could not rule out the possibility that a spark ignited the fire. Lithium-ion batteries in the area could also have been an ignition source.
The building was insured, Turcotte said. He did not say whether the building is a total loss or whether adjacent businesses were also damaged.
