Feminists can find a much better investment than Susan Collins | Letter

Cynthia Dill’s Aug. 2 op-ed, “Susan Collins is a feminist’s best investment,” claims the Republican senator is “living proof for girls that the world is their oyster.”

Collins voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, disregarding the credible accusations against him of sexual assault. His accuser testified under oath — at great risk — and yet, her voice was silenced by the Republican majority, including Collins. Her vote sent a message to young girls: their world is full of not oysters, but lessons in power.

Collins accepted Kavanaugh’s assertion that Roe v. Wade was settled law. In fact, Collins confirmed four of the six justices who would then overturn 50 years of precedent in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. It’s impossible to see how that’s a great “investment” for the women of this country.

Dill further claims that, because reproductive rights following the Dobbs decision expanded in Maine, “Collins’ vote never stood in the way of a woman’s private healthcare decisions.” The women of Maine are safe — so long as they never travel, attend school or work in states with restrictive healthcare laws.

Collins’ support of Kavanaugh opened the door to abortion restrictions resulting in the needless deaths of women across the country. Voters should hold the senator responsible for placing the rights and safety of these women and girls in peril.
