Spurs Forward Victor Wembanyama Struck by Egg Amid Escalating Fan Incidents During NBA Finals

An egg thrown from a crowd of hecklers struck San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as he entered his New York City hotel late Thursday, the latest in a series of confrontations between Knicks supporters and Spurs players and fans that have marred the 2026 NBA Finals.

Video posted to social media showed Wembanyama, the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, being escorted into the hotel by security when at least one egg came flying in his direction. The incident followed hours of unruly behavior across Manhattan, much of it tied to the Spurs' narrow 115-111 victory over the Knicks in Game 3 the previous night.

That game, which pushed San Antonio to a commanding lead in the series, was followed by watch parties and street gatherings that turned violent. New York Police Department officials said 21 people were arrested near a watch event at Bryant Park in Midtown on Monday evening following the Spurs' win. Thirteen were taken in for disorderly conduct and later released. The remaining eight face charges of assaulting officers, criminal possession of weapons, and menacing. One police officer was injured during the chaos.

Separate social media clips appearing to show Knicks fans accosting Spurs supporters on the street circulated widely afterward, with some Spurs fans having their jerseys ripped off during the encounters.

Wembanyama, speaking after Game 3, addressed the fan behavior directly.

"My thoughts of course are that we can't forget it's a game," he said. "We're just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but with the respect of each other. It's unacceptable."

ESPN host Mike Greenberg, a New York native, echoed that frustration on Thursday's edition of "Get Up," directing pointed words at those involved in the harassment.

"If you're throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people, threatening or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace," Greenberg said. "You're not disgracing this city, you're disgracing yourself and everyone who knows you. And that should go without saying. We live in a world now where somehow things don't go without saying anymore. You're a disgrace and everyone around you who knows you."

The friction between fan bases has taken on extra weight given the history between the two franchises. The Knicks last reached the NBA Finals in 1999, when they were swept by a Spurs team that has since remained one of the league's model organizations. New York has not won an NBA championship since 1973, a drought that has only intensified the emotional stakes for a long-suffering fan base now watching its team on the sport's biggest stage.

The Finals now shift to San Antonio for Game 5 on Saturday. If the series extends beyond that, Game 6 would return to New York on Tuesday, setting up the possibility of further fan confrontations in Manhattan.

The Spurs, meanwhile, face the unusual challenge of closing out a championship run while managing the off-court distractions. Wembanyama's status going forward was not immediately clear following the egg-throwing incident, though no serious injury was reported.
