'Entourage' creator Doug Ellin fires back at Debi Mazar's 'toxic' set claims
Debi Mazar, the New York‑born actress who portrayed publicist Shauna Roberts on HBO’s hit series Entourage, said in a recent interview that the show’s production environment grew toxic as the series progressed. She also claimed that network executives disapproved of her weight gain after the birth of her second child.
Mazar spoke with The Sunday Times in an interview released late last week. She described the set of the third season as a “testosterone‑fueled environment” that became “toxic” toward the end. “I’m tough, but it got toxic towards the end for me,” she said. Mazar said that when she returned to the set after welcoming her second daughter, she felt judged over her appearance. “They didn’t like that I got fat, even though I got skinny again,” she told the paper. She added that the show had been a “joy‑fest” in its first season.
The actress, 62, has spoken publicly about the experience with little fanfare, noting that she remained professional and was grateful for her time on the series. “It was a lot of fun, until it wasn’t,” she said.
Doug Ellin, the creator of Entourage, has responded to Mazar’s allegations on the social‑media platform X. On Tuesday, Ellin posted that the claims were “disgusting.” He added, “Never, ever did myself or anyone that matters care or discuss Debi Mazar’s body. I would one million percent embrace any woman who got pregnant. The only bodies on the show I ever commented on were Adrian’s (I wanted him more muscular) and Jerry Ferrara who I wanted fatter. I will forever feel bad about that because I didn’t realize the health implications at the time and now couldn't be happier for Jerry’s transformation.”
Ellin also challenged the notion that the set was “toxic.” “Fu. It wasn’t. And you can ask 99 percent of the women who were on it, who are still good friends to this day,” he wrote. “There is no opinion. No one would have given a s- about her weight. She was the publicist. She was not cast for her looks she was cast for her talent. Period.”
Mazar’s interview and Ellin’s replies have prompted renewed discussion about the working conditions on long‑running television sets. The original Entourage series ran from 2004 to 2011 on HBO and followed a rising actor and his friends as they navigated Hollywood. Mazar reprised her role in the 2015 film adaptation.
A representative for Mazar has not yet responded to inquiries about the dispute. The conversation continues online, with fans and former cast members weighing in on what it was like to work on the show.
