Letter urges Elon Musk to launch a “new political party” in the United States
A letter written by William Zierden and published in The Press Herald this week calls on billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to create a new political organization that could offer an alternative to the two-party system. Zierden, a resident of Scarborough, argues that Musk’s financial resources, technological expertise and freedom of expression would position him uniquely to revive “rational discussion” and “take us away from the authoritarianism” that the author believes is creeping into American politics.
Zierden’s letter, titled “Elon Musk is uniquely positioned to save our democracy, our country and much of the world,” lays out a proposal for a party he names the Independence Party. The writer suggests that Musk could “found, initiate, organize, fund and lead a strong new political party in the U.S.: The Independence Party.” The party, he says, would be “a party which returns us to rational discussion of differences using the framework of our founders while taking us away from the authoritarianism in which we increasingly find ourselves.”
The letter also describes a climate of turmoil in the two major parties. According to Zierden, “The substance of the two major parties is in turmoil and the aims of radicals on both sides could produce violent conflict.” He warns that the “two‑party hate complex” is supported by “the tens of thousands of people who earn their money from its existence and continuation,” and he points to an “renewal of the military‑industrial complex in the U.S.” as a source of further polarization.
In his closing remarks, Zierden encourages Musk to “let this new venture be his trip to Mars; many would join him for the ride.” He also says that Musk could “bring individuals to this new political party, encouraging members of the House and Senate to also switch over.” The letter ends with a call for citizens to welcome the “good citizens” who would support the effort.
The letter is an opinion piece. It does not indicate that any formal steps have been taken by Elon Musk or his companies toward forming a new political party. The suggestion appears to be a rhetorical device used by Zierden to spark debate about the current state of U.S. politics. No other parties have announced any plans in response to the letter, and no statements have been released by Musk or his representatives regarding the proposal.
Zierden’s piece taps into long‑standing concerns about the influence of money, lobbying, and the military‑industrial complex in American elections. By invoking Thomas Jefferson and “the framework of our founders,” the author seeks to position the Independence Party as a return to original republican ideals, contrasting it with what he sees as a “two‑party hate complex.” Whether a new party could realistically emerge from such a proposal, or how it might gain traction in a system that has historically favored the major parties, remains a matter for political analysts and the public to consider.
