Ellsworth native Dick Scott takes medical leave from Triple-A Syracuse Mets

Ellsworth native Dick Scott, manager of the Triple-A Syracuse Mets, is on a medical leave of absence, the team announced Tuesday.

Scott was diagnosed with kidney cancer and recently had surgery, the team said in a press release. He plans to return by the end of the season.

A graduate of Ellsworth High School, Scott was drafted in the 17th round by the New York Yankees in 1981. He played 10 seasons of pro baseball, making his major league debut on May 19, 1989, and playing three games for the Oakland Athletics.

The 64-year-old Scott is in his fourth season as manager of the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate. He has spent 13 seasons in the Mets organization, including serving as the bench coach for Terry Collins in New York in 2016 and 2017.

He has also worked in the Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and Miami Marlins systems.
