Eli Spaulding of Freeport qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Eli Spaulding is heading back to the U.S. Amateur Championship next month.
The Freeport native, a member at Brunswick Golf Club, shot 3-under 68 to finish tied for fourth in a qualifier Monday at Boston Golf Club in Hingham, Massachusetts.
The top six golfers at the Boston GC qualifier earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur, which will take place from Aug. 10-16 at Merion Golf Club’s East Course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. The tournament consists of two rounds of stroke play, followed by six rounds of match play.
This will be Spaulding’s third straight appearance in the U.S. Amateur.
Mick Madden, a recent Cheverus High graduate, automatically qualified for the tournament by winning the Maine Amateur earlier this month.
Spaulding was 1-over through the first nine holes before recording five birdies on the back nine. He finished one shot behind co-medalists Emile LeBrun, Rudy Sautron and Aidan O’Donovan.
Ronald Kelton of Cape Elizabeth finished 8-over 79.
