Edward Little football outlasts Scarborough in double overtime thriller

Edward Little’s Red Eddies edge Scarborough in double‑overtime thriller
AUBURN, Maine – In a dramatic showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Edward Little High School Red Eddies beat the Scarborough Red Storm 27‑21 in double overtime on Friday night. The game, played at the Red Eddies’ home field in Auburn, marked a high point in a season that has seen the program, which last captured a state title in 1977 and last reached a title game in 2002, fighting to break its long drought.
Quarterback Logan Stout, a sophomore, was the star of the night, throwing for one touchdown and rushing for three. “(This win) means the world to us and our program,” Stout told reporters after the game. “And our program had been looking for a team like this for so long, and it means so much for us to keep bringing it on and on and on, and bringing it up and up and up for the next few years — and even right now, just bringing it up from here.”
Stout’s first drive of the game was a 7‑yard touchdown pass to receiver Ashton Sullivan, putting the Red Eddies ahead 7‑0. Sullivan also recorded a sack that forced a turnover on downs early in the contest. The Scarborough offense answered with a 16‑yard touchdown pass from quarterback Oscar Goss to Jackson Leahy, tying the score at 7‑7.
In the third quarter, a critical turnover shifted momentum. Scarborough’s Ozzie Bodah returned a fumble 22 yards for a touchdown, giving the Red Storm a 13‑7 lead with under five and a half minutes remaining. Edward Little responded quickly. After a 26‑yard touchdown run by Stout was wiped out by a holding penalty, the Red Eddies scored on a 1‑yard rush that tied the game at 13‑13.
The back‑to‑back scoring continued in the fourth quarter. Stout threw for a touchdown and rushed for another, and defensive back Adonis Bailey‑Curry intercepted two passes in the final minutes, stifling Scarborough’s comeback attempts. The Red Eddies secured a 20‑13 advantage with a 2‑yard run in the closing moments.
The first overtime saw Stout run in a 1‑yard touchdown, putting Edward Little ahead 20‑13. Scarborough answered on its drive with a 2‑yard pass from Goss to Brandon Brady, making the score 20‑20. The second overtime began with Scarborough’s possession, but a missed field goal left the game open for the Red Eddies. Stout again found the end zone on a rushing play, his third touchdown of the night, to cap a 27‑21 victory.
“We grew up with not seeing a whole lot of wins, so to establish that ourselves, it’s a really big deal,” coach Brian Jahna said, reflecting on the significance of the win. “And a night like tonight could go either way, right? So to have it fall on our side of things, I think it was really big in terms of their confidence and their belief in themselves.”
Scarborough coach Michael Vance was candid in his post‑game comments. “I was honest with them just now: ‘We need to grow up.’ And I don’t question their effort, but poise in big moments is important, and that was the difference in the game. So we’re going
