Questions Emerge Over NYC Democratic Socialists Leader's Working-Class Narrative

New York City Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo is facing scrutiny over claims about his background that appear to contradict public records and available evidence.

The 38-year-old socialist has built his public persona around an immigrant success story, telling the New York Times earlier this month that his parents arrived in the United States with nothing.

"My parents came here, they had nothing," Gordillo said in a profile interview. "Their first jobs were in fast food and cleaning houses. They built success in this country. And they're absolutely the exception."

Gordillo has said he advocates for socialism because he wants to create a world where his family's story of climbing out of poverty would no longer be remarkable.

However, a 2021 obituary for his paternal grandfather tells a different story. Manuel Gordillo immigrated from Peru to the United States in 1958 to practice medicine. He eventually settled in Ohio, where he built a career as a psychiatrist and served as president of the Ohio Psychiatric Association.

The obituary suggests Gordillo's family had established professional success well before he was born, raising questions about his description of his parents' upbringing.

When reached for comment by Fox News Digital, neither Gordillo nor the New York City Democratic Socialists of America responded.

Separately, Gordillo has described himself as a "union electrician," but records from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers indicate he has not been a member since March. According to a statement from the IBEW, Gordillo was terminated from the Joint Apprentice Training Committee program after an extended absence from required work and classes.

"After learning of Mr. Gordillo's prolonged absence from and failure to participate in required work and classes, the trustees of the Joint Apprentice Training Committee terminated Mr. Gordillo from the program," the union stated.

Despite this, Gordillo continues to identify himself as a "union electrician" on social media.

Additional questions have emerged about Gordillo's housing situation. In interviews, he described renting a modest apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Investigation revealed he actually resides in a $1.4 million townhouse in a more affluent section of the borough, a property owned by his father.

New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino commented on the arrangement through social media, saying the property was converted from a two-family residence into a single-family home for Gordillo's use.

"Not only did DSA co-chair Gustavo Gordillo's parents buy him this rowhouse, they converted it from a two family and renovated it into a luxury single-family home for him," Paladino posted on X. "Exactly the kind of 'greed' the DSA rails against on a daily basis, and reducing valuable housing inventory by one more unit, which is supposedly something the DSA cares very deeply about."

The scrutiny of Gordillo's background comes as progressive candidates across the country have faced criticism for presenting themselves as champions of working-class Americans while living in circumstances that contradict that narrative.
