Drone strikes apartment building in NATO member Romania as Russia attacks neighboring Ukraine

Drone Strike on Romanian Apartment Building Causes Fire and Injuries
A drone that entered Romanian airspace on Friday slammed into the roof of a residential building in the southern municipality of Galați, igniting an explosion that set a fire ablaze on the tenth floor. The incident, the first time a populated area in Romania has been hit by a drone, left several people injured and prompted a swift military and emergency response.
The Incident
Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the drone, believed to belong to Russia, was part of an overnight attack on Ukrainian territory near the shared border. As the aircraft crossed into Romanian airspace, radar systems tracked it as it moved southward into the Galați region before crashing onto the apartment building’s roof.
Emergency services reported that the drone’s explosive payload detonated upon impact, immediately igniting a blaze that was quickly contained by local firefighters. Seventy residents were evacuated from the building, and the fire was brought under control within a few hours.
Casualties and Evacuations
The state news agency noted that a woman and her child received medical treatment for minor injuries after being hospitalized. Two additional individuals were treated on the scene for panic attacks. No fatalities were reported, though the incident highlighted the potential dangers posed by foreign drones near civilian structures.
Military Response
In the wake of the strike, Romania’s defense ministry deployed two F‑16 fighter jets and a military helicopter to monitor the situation. Pilots were authorized to engage any drones that threatened Romanian territory. The incident follows a series of more than 24 separate incidents in which Russian drones entered Romanian airspace since the onset of the Ukraine conflict.
International Reactions
Romanian officials have called for enhanced anti‑drone capabilities from NATO, describing the drone’s flight path as a “serious violation of international law.” The request comes amid growing concerns over Russia’s use of unmanned aircraft in the region.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking during a recent visit to Sweden, urged the United States to accelerate delivery of Patriot air‑defense missiles to Ukraine. He warned that current supplies were insufficient and that U.S. resources were strained by other global commitments, including a conflict in Iran.
Context
The incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Romania—a member of both NATO and the European Union—reporting frequent incursions by Russian drones. The latest strike underscores the precarious security situation along the eastern flank of the European alliance and has prompted calls for greater collective defense measures.
For now, the fire remains under control, and the injured are receiving care. Romanian authorities continue to investigate the drone’s origins and the circumstances that allowed it to breach national airspace.
