Driver dies when SUV collides with with pickup, dump truck in Saco
A fatal vehicle collision on Route 1 in Saco killed an SUV driver on Thursday afternoon.
The crash occurred at about 3 p.m. near 977 Route 1, close to the intersection of Waterfall Drive. Police say the gray SUV was traveling southbound when it crossed the center line. The vehicle first struck a black pickup truck, then, after continuing 950 feet, collided with a blue dump truck.
The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the driver's name, stating that next of kin will be notified. Police did not report any other injuries.
Saco police and the city’s fire department responded to the incident. Route 1 was reduced to a single lane in each direction for several hours following the crash, impacting traffic for commuters and travelers on the corridor.
Investigators from the Kennebunk and Windham police departments, the York County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine State Police commercial vehicle enforcement unit are assisting in the investigation.
The incident underscores the dangers of high‑speed traffic on the region’s main thoroughfares. The Saco Police Department is continuing to gather evidence to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision.
