Vanuatu’s Ministry of the Prime Minister reported that the passenger ferry MV Matui capsized on Friday while sailing between the islands of Ambae and Santo. The vessel, which carried 47 people, went down in the South Pacific, prompting a rescue effort that has so far saved 15 individuals and recovered one body, while more than 30 remain unaccounted for.

The ministry’s Facebook post expressed condolences: “Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones,” and added, “To the survivors, we [pray for your strength] and recovery. To the families of those missing and those we have lost, please know that the nation stands with you in this time of grief.”

Retired Coast Guard Captain Aaron Davenport, speaking to Fox News Digital, said survival prospects depend on several conditions: water temperature, any injuries, and whether the individuals have access to flotation devices. “They may be clinging to debris. But as the days go on, the chances of survival are less and less,” he noted, warning that a lack of food, water and the risk of hypothermia further diminish odds.

Authorities have redirected search operations from open water toward Vanuatu’s southeastern coastline, believing currents could have carried survivors there. Parliament member Matai Seremaiah confirmed the shift, stating that the hunt will continue along the shoreline.

The ministry indicated that the accident was likely triggered by ignored marine warnings concerning strong winds and the possibility that the ferry was overloaded. “This tragedy is a reminder that the safety of life at sea must come first. Ship owners must ensure their vessels are seaworthy, carry all required safety equipment and have proper communication systems on board. Ignoring strong marine warnings puts lives at risk.”

A full investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the sinking and to prevent future incidents. The incident joins a recent ferry disaster off northern Cyprus on August 30, where the Filo Jet catamaran capsized with 267 people aboard, resulting in 14 deaths, 14 missing persons and the rescue of 239 survivors. Investigators are still probing that separate accident.

The ongoing search in Vanuatu continues as officials hope to locate the remaining passengers and bring closure to the families affected.
