Down East deaths of grandmother, grandchildren ruled accidental drownings

The grandmother and two grandchildren found in a vehicle in the ocean at Roque Bluffs last month died due to an accidental drowning, officials announced Tuesday.
Sharon Bukulmez, 61, of Mount Desert, was last seen the night of Sept. 19 leaving a family wedding in Jonesboro with her granddaughter Kinsley Grubb, 5, and grandson Sawyer Grubb, 3, both of Bar Harbor, according to Maine State Police.
They did not arrive in Machias as expected, police said, and location information obtained from Bukulmez’s cellphone led officials to a boat ramp at the end of Schoppee Point Road in Roque Bluffs.
Bukulmez’s vehicle was located submerged in Pond Cove at about 7 a.m. Sept. 20, police said, and the three bodies were recovered that morning.
The Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined their official causes of death to be accidental drownings, Maine State Police announced in a news release Tuesday.
The incident is still under investigation, the news release said.
