William Jewell College mourns loss of football player MicahJo Barnett

Liberty, Mo. – The campus of William Jewell College was plunged into grief on Saturday when junior running back MicahJo Barnett collapsed on the sidelines during the season‑opening football game against Fort Lewis College. The medical emergency that followed proved fatal, and the game was called off after Barnett’s death.

Barnett, a business major from Shawnee, Kansas, had been a key contributor for the Cardinals. He had already scored a touchdown earlier in the match before the tragic incident occurred. The game, held in Greene Stadium on the college’s campus, was suspended as the team and the community processed the sudden loss.

The college’s athletic department announced the tragedy on social media, stating: “William Jewell & the Liberty community mourn the passing of junior MicahJo Barnett. Our thoughts & prayers are with MicahJo’s family, teammates, friends, & coaches. A vigil will be held tonight on the Jewell quad at 8 p.m. in honor of MicahJo & family.”

Dr. Drew Van Horn, the interim president, expressed gratitude for the rapid response of local authorities. “We appreciate the response from the sheriff’s office, the police department, EMS team, physician for the team, everybody responded so quickly, so well,” he told Fox 4 KC. “Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community.”

Barnett’s life off the field was equally impressive. He grew up in a family of seven, with six siblings, and had led Liberty North High School to a state title in his senior year. As a student‑athlete at William Jewell, he appeared in eight games during his freshman season and returned to play five games in 2025 after a season‑ending injury.

A vigil for Barnett will take place Saturday evening on the college quad at 8 p.m., as students, faculty, and community members gather to honor his memory. The event will offer a moment for collective mourning and celebration of the life of a promising young athlete.
